A momentous occasion unfolded on July 9 as the China Writers' Creative Base was officially established on Dachen Island in Taizhou, East China's Zhejiang province.
Distinguished figures from the literary world, including Ye Mei, president of the Chinese Prose Society, Xu Jian, president of the Chinese Narrative Literature Society, and Yang Ke, president of the Chinese Poetry Society, along with renowned writers and scholars from all corners of the country, congregated on the island to bear witness to this historic milestone.
Guo Xingqin, head of the Jiaojiang Department of Publicity, expressed her hope that the newly established base serve as a platform for high-level artistic creation and exchange, igniting a fresh wave of innovation and inspiration in grassroots literary circles.
Dachen Island, located 52 kilometers from Taizhou's urban area, holds the moniker "Pearl in the East China Sea" and is renowned for its indomitable spirit, which has been passed down through the generations.
Upon liberation by the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) in 1955, the island was a desolate wasteland ravaged by years of war. Determined to bring it back to life, over 400 volunteers were dispatched to Dachen Island from 1956 to 1960, working tirelessly to reclaim and revive the land. A monument was later erected on the island to commemorate their pioneering efforts.
